Julia “Juju” Siegfried came into the world with boundless energy and a radiant spirit that made people stop and smile. She’s always been the kind of child who captures hearts effortlessly—waving goodbye to an entire restaurant by name, striking up conversations with strangers at Target, and leaving everyone a little happier than they were before meeting her. Her family lovingly calls her superpower “making people happy”—and anyone who meets her would agree it’s true.
At five years old, Juju was thriving. She loved to sing, dance, run, jump, and play. She was a preschooler with a whole world ahead of her—full of laughter, friends, and imagination. But just weeks after her fifth birthday in December 2023, her joyful rhythm came to a sudden halt.
Her personality and energy faded. The vibrant, nonstop Julia grew weak, tired, and breathless. She slept often, lost her appetite, and winced in pain when touched. Her mom tried to rationalize the symptoms—maybe it was anxiety or a bad ear infection—but deep down, she knew something was wrong. When the nosebleeds wouldn’t stop and Juju could no longer stand on her own, she rushed her to urgent care. Moments later, they were sent to CHOP (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia).
“We’re all really scared for Julia. We think it’s either an infection or it’s Leukemia.”
A breathless silence fell over her mom. It felt like the world stopped. And within an hour, the diagnosis was confirmed:
B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
Their nightmare had a name.
Treatment began immediately, and the first few months were the hardest. Julia lost her hair within weeks, and high-dose steroids altered her mood and appearance. She developed painful neuropathy in her feet, required physical therapy to relearn basic movements, and eventually had to wear leg braces for support. Eating became a challenge, and her weight dropped significantly—until formula through her NG tube helped her bounce back.
But Juju didn’t give up.
She fought.
She adapted.
She smiled through it all.
She’s faced anaphylactic shock from chemotherapy, multiple painful injections, three blood infections, and three port replacements. She’s been through more in one year than most people face in a lifetime. And yet, if you saw her, you’d still see the same sparkling girl who makes the world around her brighter.
Through all the hospital stays, procedures, and setbacks, Juju kept finding ways to spread joy. One of those ways was starting a flower stand with her mom—creating floral arrangements to sell at pop-ups in hopes of spreading awareness, giving back to pediatric cancer foundations, and simply bringing happiness to others.
She even finished kindergarten—something her family wasn’t sure would be possible—proving once again that Julia doesn’t just face the odds… she beats them.
Now six years old and in the maintenance phase of her treatment, Julia continues to show strength beyond her years. She’s enrolled in a clinical trial, battling side effects, working hard to regain her strength, and preparing for first grade.
Julia Siegfried is not just a cancer fighter—she is a radiant soul, a force of nature, and proof that even in life’s darkest moments, light can shine through. She makes the world better every single day just by being herself.
