Jakob Serrano has always been a young man with a deep sense of purpose, conviction, and heart. From the time he was three years old—when he decided to become a vegan because, as he put it, “animals are my friends”—Jakob showed the world that he would live life on his own terms, guided by compassion and quiet courage.
By the time he entered his junior year of high school, Jakob was already ahead of the curve. He was enrolled in college courses, preparing for a future he had dreamed of for years: attending UC Berkeley, a goal he worked toward with focus and determination.
But in the fall of 2022, during a Halloween-themed trunk-or-treat event, something felt off. That moment became the unexpected turning point in Jakob’s journey. Shortly after, at just 16 years old, he was diagnosed with Leukemia.
The diagnosis shattered what should have been some of the most vibrant years of his life. Instead of college tours and football games, Jakob spent nearly a year and a half in the hospital—facing pain that no teenager should endure, fighting not only cancer, but sepsis—twice. The complications were severe, and at one point, doctors had to perform a life-saving surgery that left him with an ostomy, a challenging reality he now faces every day with extraordinary grace.
Through every setback, Jakob never lost sight of his dreams. Even in pain, even in fear, he fought with bravery and optimism, never letting his diagnosis define him. Incredibly, he graduated high school with honors, walking the stage and making his family beam with pride.
For his family, the diagnosis was devastating. The pain and fear were overwhelming. But Jakob’s courage became their compass. His older brother Xander, unable to bear the weight of watching his sibling suffer, took a full semester off from college—a silent sacrifice out of love and grief. The family’s life was turned upside down, every day lived in a state of vigilance and deep emotional strain. But together, they faced each moment head-on, drawing strength from Jakob’s fierce resilience.
Jakob is more than a cancer patient. He’s a musician, having spent years in band playing the trombone. He’s a student, a dreamer, a compassionate soul with big plans and a heart to match. He hasn’t let cancer rewrite his story—he’s just added chapters of courage and endurance.
And maybe most importantly, Jakob is a loyal friend. In every photo, by his side, are his two cousins—his best friends and constants in a world that has been anything but predictable.
