Rodrigo Palencia: The Quiet Strength of a Fighter

Born on July 26, 2010, Rodrigo Palencia has always been a bright light—a straight-A student in honors, a charismatic friend, and a deeply curious young man who loved being around people. With his warm personality and love for learning, he thrived both in and out of the classroom. Rodrigo was the kind of kid who made school look easy and friendships feel effortless. He was confident, kind, and joyful—a true social butterfly with a signature look: long, curly hair that matched his vibrant spirit.

But in 2025, during a routine PE test at school, Rodrigo began experiencing sharp chest pains. Given his history of asthma, it was initially thought to be an asthma-related episode. Concerned, his family took him to the emergency room, where a scan revealed something far more serious than expected: enlarged chest walls and abnormalities that had nothing to do with asthma. The chest pain, it turned out, was a coincidental warning sign—a blessing in disguise.

Soon after, at just 14 years old, Rodrigo was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

The news came as a shock and turned his world upside down.

Overnight, the life Rodrigo knew—a life full of classes, friends, school events, and dreams—was replaced by doctor visits, treatment plans, and chemotherapy. He missed his entire freshman year of high school, a rite of passage most teens look forward to. The social life he once loved faded into the background, replaced by isolation and uncertainty.

One of the most heartbreaking moments for Rodrigo was losing his hair. His long curls were more than just hair—they were part of his identity, a visible piece of who he was. Watching it fall away left him feeling raw and vulnerable. It was a loss that hit hard.

For his family, the diagnosis shook every part of their lives. Schedules were rearranged. Work became secondary. Rodrigo’s siblings had to adjust to new routines, new emotions, and the constant worry that cancer brings into a home. Life became a balancing act between treatment and everything else.

But Rodrigo’s strength hasn’t faded. Even while undergoing chemotherapy, he continued excelling academically through online school—a testament to his determination and intellect. Still, the emotional toll is real. The isolation has taken a toll on his mental health, making his fight not just physical, but emotional and mental too.

Through it all, Rodrigo remains a fighter. His journey is not just about battling cancer—it’s about rediscovering joy, rebuilding confidence, and holding on to hope.
