Leah Viera: A Brave Light in a Dark Storm

Before cancer entered her life, Leah Viera was the picture of joy and innocence. A bright, happy baby, Leah loved playing with her baby dolls, finger painting, coloring, and watching her favorite movies like Finding Nemo, Rio, and Ferdinand. She had just become a big sister, and she adored spending time cuddling and playing with her new baby brother. Life was calm, full of love, and full of Leah’s giggles.

But on May 17, 2021, that peaceful life changed forever.

One morning, Leah woke up making a strange grunting sound. Though subtle, her parents knew it was out of character. A visit to the pediatrician showed she was anemic, but when further tests revealed that it wasn’t iron-related, the family was rushed to the ER. That night, Leah was admitted to the pediatric oncology floor, and by Wednesday morning, she was already in surgery for a port-a-cath placement, a lumbar puncture, and her first dose of chemotherapy.

Everything was happening so fast that her parents barely had time to process it.

“The moment her body went limp in my arms from the anesthesia, then placing her down on the OR table absolutely broke me.”

After surgery, as her tiny body stirred in the recovery room, Leah used her baby sign language to say “all done” while crying in her parents’ arms—a heart-shattering moment for any parent, especially knowing that this was only the beginning of a long, painful road.

Within the first month of treatment, Leah lost the ability to walk, experienced severe pain, and lost all her hair. For most children, losing hair is difficult—but for Leah, it meant losing her comfort. Since infancy, she had soothed herself by sucking her thumb while twirling her hair. Cancer had taken not just her strength but her source of peace.

Still, Leah refused to let cancer dim her spirit. She continued to play, laugh, and show kindness to everyone she met. She counted the fishies on the walls at the oncology clinic, made funny faces, played with her dolls and paints, and ran up and down the hospital hallways when she regained her strength. Her bravery showed up in the smallest things—like playing with her mommy’s hair during procedures or smiling at her nurses.

Leah’s diagnosis was devastating for the whole family. The sudden shift from raising a toddler and newborn to living in a hospital, filled with fear and uncertainty, was overwhelming. But through every tear, they held Leah close, showering her with love, hope, and strength.

“She has a smile that shines so bright, despite all the darkness that her cancer diagnosis brought to her life.”

Leah continues to be a bright light. She is courageous, creative, loving, and full of life—no matter how unfairly hard it has been. Her story is one of unimaginable strength wrapped in the spirit of a child who never stopped smiling.
