Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Hero

Magali Estrella Bracamontes

Juvenile Myelomonocytic Leukemia

Angel

In the tender embrace of memories, we remember our remarkable Magali Bracamontes, who touched our lives with her indomitable spirit and radiant smile. At a mere two years old, her world changed, but her fearless heart remained unyielding. Though her time with us was brief, it was adorned with the boundless love of her older sisters Leia and Selina, and her devoted parents, Ericka and William. Her infectious laughter filled our days, as she fearlessly embraced life’s wonders and adventures.

In January 2022, our entire family battled COVID. Although the rest of us seemed to recover, Magali’s condition remained unchanged, causing concern. Her doctor conducted a series of tests, revealing an alarming drop in her hemoglobin levels. With the news that her hemoglobin was as low as 2.1, far below the normal level of 10 or above, we rushed her to the ER.

Upon admission to the oncology unit, Magali received her first blood transfusion, marking the beginning of a year-long journey filled with regular transfusions every two to four weeks. She was diagnosed with the rare blood disorder Monosomy 7, prompting the need for a bone marrow transplant. On November 2, 2022, she was admitted to the hospital, where she endured intense chemotherapy before receiving her transplant on November 8.

Despite her remarkable strength, challenges lay ahead. Magali’s health fluctuated – she was discharged from the hospital right before Christmas 2022 but in February 2023, she was rehospitalized due to a persistent cold that escalated into more severe illnesses. Tragically, we learned that her body was rejecting the bone marrow transplant, and on February 21, our world shattered as she was diagnosed with Acute myeloid leukemia and Juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia—a devastating and aggressive cancer.

Through tears of sorrow, our beloved Magali Estrella Bracamontes earned her angel wings on March 7, 2023. Throughout her short but impactful life, Magali exemplified courage, joy, and fearlessness. She never surrendered, facing adversities with a radiant smile and indomitable spirit. Her bravery touched our hearts deeply and will remain etched in our souls forever.

Magali’s adventurous spirit knew no bounds; she fearlessly embraced the unknown, teaching us all the beauty of taking risks. One glance at her favorite toy dinosaur, ever-present in her hands, was enough to spark joy in our hearts. With a joyful “RAWR,” she invited us into her world of fascination with prehistoric creatures.

Every day, we reminisce about her bold personality, missing the sight of her exploring new heights by climbing on counters and leaping from the couch with glee. She cherished every moment of thrill and excitement, and her courage was only matched by her fierce determination to conquer leukemia.

In the fabric of our dreams, we envision Magali as the spirited athlete she would have become, perhaps a participant in T-ball alongside her sister Selina, or soaring gracefully in gymnastics. Although she isn’t physically here, we can feel her presence, knowing she is on an eternal journey of endless adventure.

Magali, your legacy remains etched in our hearts. Your joyful spirit, unyielding bravery, and unbounded love have forever changed us. We treasure every memory and honor your memory in all that we do. We’ll never forget your strong, powerful “RAWR!”
