Sebastian Lopez: A Young Man’s Unshakable Fight

Sebastian Lopez was stepping into adulthood with everything in place—a straight-A student, freshly graduated from high school, preparing to move out for college. He was excited about the future: the independence, the friendships, the freedom. He loved hanging out with friends, watching his beloved San Francisco 49ers with family, and enjoying the vibrant chapter of life that 18 brings.

But in a matter of weeks, everything changed.

During an overnight visit to the college he planned to attend, Sebastian fell and hit his head. The diagnosis was a minor concussion, and doctors advised rest. But things quickly worsened. He began suffering bloody noses, vomiting, and intense headaches. A return visit to the ER showed abnormal lab counts. Within days, he was transported by ambulance to Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.

After more testing and a bone marrow biopsy, the news came: Leukemia.

The fall was unrelated—a tragic coincidence that uncovered a hidden battle inside his body.

Sebastian’s plans for adulthood- college, work, independence, driving, social life- were all paused. He began treatment just two days after diagnosis, without time to process what was happening. Life was put on pause for him. Luckily for him he had a support team made up of family, friends, church members, teachers, and so many more whom held him close in all of their prayers.

Now, a year later, Sebastian has completed his first year of treatment and is preparing to enter Maintenance, a phase that brings fewer hospital visits and more freedom. He recently celebrated his 19th birthday, a milestone full of hope. Though he won’t be heading away for college just yet, he plans to attend community college, get back behind the wheel, see friends, and even attend a 49ers game—a much-needed return to the life he put on pause.

Through it all, Sebastian has shown unmatched strength and courage. He continues to fight not just for himself, but also in honor of his beloved Godmother/Aunt, who walked closely with him through this journey before sadly passing away. Their bond was deep—unspoken and strong. Her memory fuels his determination.

Sebastian Lopez is more than a patient. He is a warrior. An inspiration. A reminder that even in the darkest moments, hope doesn’t fade—it fights back.
