Born on June 6, 2022, Sergio Romo came into the world full of adventure and joy. From the earliest days, he was the kind of child who couldn’t be kept indoors. No matter the weather—sunshine or chill—Sergio could be found outside, digging through dirt, playing with his toys, or running wild at the park. He was full of life, laughter, and curiosity.
But at just two years old, Sergio’s bright world took a sudden and terrifying turn.
His family began to notice subtle changes—nausea, vomiting, a strange head tilt. Soon, Sergio became confused, unsteady, and uncharacteristically tired. Then came the seizures—frequent, relentless, and terrifying. Though they sought medical help, an appointment with a neurologist was months away. And just as suddenly as they began, the seizures stopped… but only for a while.
By late October, Sergio was no longer the vibrant little boy who once loved playing in the dirt. He was exhausted, vomiting nonstop, and falling over with every few steps. His parents rushed him to a local ER in Victorville, where they were told he was lethargic and dehydrated and would need to be transferred to Loma Linda Children’s Hospital.
But they couldn’t wait.
Sergio’s condition was worsening by the minute, so his mother and grandmother made the decision to drive him to the hospital themselves. On the way, things took a terrifying turn—Sergio began convulsing, and by the time they arrived, he was unresponsive and posturing, a sign of severe brain pressure. The hospital staff rushed into action. Within minutes, he was intubated and taken for emergency scans.
What they found was devastating—a malignant tumor the size of a peach pressing against his brain, distorting everything inside his tiny skull.
Sergio underwent emergency brain surgery to relieve the pressure and remove the tumor. The procedure was successful, but the pathology report confirmed what no family ever wants to hear: cancer. Specifically, an embryonal neoplasm of the brain—a rare and aggressive diagnosis with an uncertain prognosis.
The impact on Sergio and his family was life-changing.
Sergio had to relearn the most basic things—how to roll over, sit up, crawl, even walk. His development had to restart from scratch. For his family, it was a world turned upside down. Doctors gave them grim statistics and warned of the challenges ahead. But Sergio was not a number. He was a fighter.
Despite every setback, every scan, every needle, and every round of treatment, Sergio has proven just how resilient the human spirit can be. He has made it through what no child should ever have to face—and now, he’s on his final transplant, standing at the edge of a new beginning.
Through pain, fear, and impossibility, Sergio has shown what courage looks like in its purest form. His story is not just one of survival—it’s one of strength, determination, and beating the odds.
Sergio Romo is a warrior. And his fight is far from over—but he’s giving it everything he’s got.
